And just LOVED it! Have listened to both parts of Straddlers - what can I say, you guys have done such a fantastic job! I thoroughly enjoyed both parts.

A few comments:
- I agree that in movies like Jaani Dushman, Pati Patni aur Woh and Chehre Pe Chehra, Sanjeev Kumar makes you hit your head against the wall, but I'd like to think these are just exceptions in an otherwise fantastic acting career. I'm thinking of movies like Koshish (deaf/dumb) and Angoor (double role), amongst a whole lot of brilliant performances. I think you guys were way too harsh on him, but hey, it's your show. :-)

- You were spot on in your assessment of Aish. When she's not treated like she's on a pedestal, she's so much more watchable. Like in Kandukondain Kandukondain and Guru.

- Anupam Kher's role in Saaransh was brilliant and merited a mention, I thought.

- Om Puri was very good in Ardh Satya. I think with Anupam Kher and Om Puri, as they've grown older, they've gone into these character side roles (not even a character main role). The character has not demanded anything from them, they've not done anything special for it either. I think they should be remembered more for the meaningful roles they did in 80s films.

- I thought Rekha was amazing as that school/college girl in Khoobsoorat and Jhooti. And of course in Khoon Bhari Maang. Whenever she was given a meaningful role, she rarely disappointed.

- Shabana is one of my favourites too. As is Konkana. And Deepti Naval.

- Naseeruddin Shah did try his hand with mainstream cinema early on with Sunayana (1979). But he wasn't accepted then in this genre, he'd been typecast as an "art" actor. So he had to continue in this genre for a while before moving back to mainstream in the late 80s/early 90s.

Just some thoughts. Thank you all so much. This was SO MUCH FUN.rajahttp://rajaswaminathan.blogspot.nl/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-796922952739786369.post-44796686482926758832012-01-19T21:04:48.479-06:002012-01-19T21:04:48.479-06:00So happy you guys are back! When Jackie Shroff kicks him out the house, Salman instructs the horse to keep an eye on the family he's left behind. The horse doesn't actually do a very good job of this, but it does free Salman from jail in time for the climatic dishoom. So only two Khans to go. The star I'd really like to see with an anipal is Ajay Devgn because imagine the stunts (nay, Thrills even!) they could do together.

JenniferAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-796922952739786369.post-7491277718350916732011-12-11T09:33:57.696-06:002011-12-11T09:33:57.696-06:00I know we mentioned it in the conversation and am ...I know we mentioned it in the conversation and am pretty sure that bit made the final cut of the podcast. This particular topic was the hardest one to prepare for because we talk about so many films. I hope you'll listen to some episodes centered on just one film and see if you think we are sharper on the details for those (although I know I am fuzzy on some plot points in Aa Gale Lag Jaa, for example, and even say in the recording that I think it's hard to keep the ins and outs of a Manmohan Desai film entirely straight).Beth Loves Bollywoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05540154833326987567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-796922952739786369.post-40563052668230284912011-10-24T16:20:36.498-05:002011-10-24T16:20:36.498-05:00Wouldn't it perhaps be better to have watched ...Wouldn't it perhaps be better to have watched the movie a little before the podcast so there's better recall? There was so much I didn't remember about this film and while I used to be a bit indifferent about it, I think if I watched it again after listening to this episode, I would end up with a deep affection for it (despite the 'concern rape').

As for single dads, some other ones I thought of were Amitabh in Mahaan (he raised one son and Waheeda raised the other) and Rajesh Khanna in Agar Tum Na Hote and Masterji. Of those, Masterji is probably the most involved in being a father - he takes his baby to work with him, cooks, etc. etc. and only reluctantly hires help (or has it thrust upon him by Sridevi).

And um, ROLLER SKATES? YES PLEASE. I mean, Xanadu is one of my favorite movies. It certainly made Tumse Jo Dekhte Hi Pyar Hua and Aaja Re Aa from Patthar Ke Phool better! :-)

Keep up the great work ladies! What I love about Chhoti Bahu is how I do not wish that kind of life for anybody, since Meena showed me so well how miserable it can be.
